Paving Foreman Superintendent

General Job Description

The Forman/Superintendent will arrange the work of one or more paving crews and coordinate activities of workers engaged in asphalt milling and paving operations on public roadways and private commercial and residential developments.
Provides overall on-site leadership and management on the jobsite. The Foreman/Superintendent is considered the Company’s representative and main point of contact on the project site. The Forman/Superintendent handles the flow of communication between Client’s on-site representatives, on-site inspectors, subcontractors, employees and personnel. The Forman/Superintendent plans, coordinates, and supervises onsite functions including scheduling, material control, trucking, and day-to-day direction of field personnel.

 

Key Duties:

  • Coordinates, plans and supervises paving crews, subcontractors and any other activities for the assigned project.

  • Determine and coordinate trucking needs for milling/paving operations.  

  • Complete a daily report, with all employees hours and equipment cost coded to specific work phase codes, quantities of production, activities on site, etc.

  • Liaison with other departments, asphalt plant, trucking companies, inspectors, clients, etc. to ensure all required materials, equipment, and inspections support the project schedule.

  • Coordinates work plans and specifications with the Project Manager, clarifying discrepancies.

  • Develop “look ahead” schedules for crews, equipment and material 

  • Optimizes operations quality/procedures/production.

  • Chooses techniques and defines asphalt means and methods.

  • Enforce project safety and security plan as defined in the Company safety program and in accordance with all applicable safety codes and regulations. 

 

Qualification Requirements:

  • General. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Screed Man and/or Paving Foreman/Superintendent, preferably a minimum of 5 years.

    • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred. Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with management and fellow employees. 5+ years of materials, methods, maintenance and operation of equipment required with an emphasis on asphalt and paving.

    • Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office and Excel. 

    • Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail

    • Safety Certifications:  Minimum OSHA 30 HR course, Maintenance and Protection of Traffic Training, etc. The Company is willing to assist with update training certificates. 

    • Experience working with NYSDOT and strong understanding of it’s specifications.

    • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required.

  • Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Paving Forman/Superintendent to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.

    • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 30 pounds and, at times, as much as 50 pounds, as may be assigned.

    • Physical dexterity involving stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions.

    • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.

    • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

    • Must be able to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.

  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Forman/Paving Superintendent encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

    • High energy and pressure environment. 

    • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

    • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction site.

    • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

    • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on a construction site such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and asphalt.
